Zhizo: (500-800 ad)

•6th/7th century a group of farming communities who
occupied the southern Limpopo valley.
•Archaeologists have classified their pottery into four
stages, Kadzi, Zihwa, Gokomere, and Schroda.
•These people were farmers who began to settle in
centralised structures that show hierarchical structure
showing that there were rulers.
•Zhizo farmers were largely engaged in cattle keeping
because the area in which they settled was a good
cattle country.
•The major Zhizo settlement was the Toutswemogala
state established in Botswana.
•Due to its distance from the east coast Toutswemogala
was not engaged in much long distance trade.
•The Zhizo communities were organised in a hierarchy
based on cattle.
•From the period of 800 a new group comes in.
•The growth of Mapungubwe and consequently the
development and dominance of Great Zimbabwe state
may have led to the demise of Zhizo.
