Purposeful Activism in Zimbabwe

Purposeful Activism in Zimbabwe

By Brian Maregedze

Over forty years ago, there was little talk about professional public speakers in the Zimbabwe urban social space. While it is true that traditionally they were prolific speakers who at times were invited to share words of wisdom at social gatherings, the speaking platform has gained a new currency over the past two decades.

There has been a proliferation of private coaching academies in Zimbabwe particularly urban spaces with a focus on teaching public speaking. The professional turn in public speaking has witnessed outputs emerging in the form of books and documentaries unpacking experiences of people from diverse backgrounds. Their digital presence is noticeable.

Purposeful activism is driven by a sense of empathy and compassion, a recognition that we are all in this together and that our struggles are interconnected. It's about recognizing the humanity in each other and working to create a world that is more just, equitable, and sustainable for all.

Ralph strongly believes that through purposeful activism, we can create meaningful change that goes beyond just raising awareness or protesting. Living a purpose-driven life is a journey that requires intention, direction, and action. For those seeking to make a meaningful impact, purposeful activism offers a powerful path forward.

Ralph Kadurira who has been in this ‘industry’ for over a decade recently publishing his 6th book, Unlock Your Why: A guide to discovering and living a Purpose-Driven Life (2024). Over the years, Kadurira has gained a new name, Mr. Purpose, due to his Purpose Driven Activism. It is no wonder that he is consistent with the words, ‘I want to inspire people, I want someone to look at me say, “because of you, I didn’t give up.”-Unknown.’ These are timeless aphorisms that appeal to people of diverse cultural and religious backgrounds.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, finding the meaning and or purpose of life became more real than before, at least to the majority of people who were under the lockdown regimes across the world. It is during this time of global uncertainty and hope that Ralph, through virtual ethnography, interviews managed to develop and write this book. Again, some of the interviews were also carried out under the Heart & Soul TV program.

Ralph Kadurira appeals to all walks of life with his Activist purpose-driven contribution. It is a treasure worth having on every bookshelf from a well-experienced purpose-driven activist. The real-life stories explored by local (Zimbabwean) game changers within and beyond its borders makes it relevant to all those with a passion for making a positive difference.

Among key interviewees who are categorised as game changers include Nigel Maritinyu popularly known as the Slick Pastor; Kudzai Gurure; Munyaradzi and Janet Manyowa; Simbarashe Nyamadzawo; Dr. Chashe; Melody and Sheunopa Gambiza; Danai Clay to name only these among many.

Mr. Purpose’s contribution to the world of sharing real life experiences although clear on his Christian values, makes an effort to think and explore examples that fit in and outside Biblical references. The “monotony” of the rags to riches tag found in some motivational writings is well addressed by Ralph through engaging with contemporary and closer home stories. These real-life stories explore obstacles humanity encounters over time in all efforts to positively change individual lives. While educational qualifications are crucial to surviving in this modern world, Ralph turns towards developing one’s passion and utilising talents.  Slick Pastor despite having academic qualifications, has also developed his brand as an Inspirational speaker, comedian, digital marketer, and Emcee.

Writing at a time when the family unit faces serious challenges, Ralph shares the story of Munyaradzi and Janet Manyowa as a power couple who work together and excel in that which they specialise. Ralph adds a disclaimer that he is no relationship expert as in marriage but taking positive lessons is his mission.
